To provide for the operation of the Region Water Treatment Plant in the abstraction treatment, and storage of potable water for distribution to customers.

 

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To operate pumps and valves to regulate the flow of raw water to the plant and determine rate from appropriate measuring devices.
  • To operate chemical dosing and clarifier pumps in accordance with operating procedures.
  • To carryout regular checks, clean strainers and wash filters as required during a shift.
  • To charge chemicals including aluminum sulfate, ammonium sulfate, hydrated lime and chlorine, for the treatment of water.
  • To administer water quality-monitoring tests including colour, ph etc. and maintain accurate records of results. Ensures that the final water quality complies with the approved standard.
  • To monitor ground storage tank water level and advise Pump Station Operator to adjust outgoing pressure where necessary.
  • To desludge raw water sedimentation tanks as per operating instructions.
  • To receive, record and account for all base materials, tools, spares etc. handed over for use at the plant.
  • To assist with maintenance and repair activities being undertaken at the plant.
  • To record all aspects of operations during a shift on the prescribed log sheet.
  • To undertake routine maintenance of equipment such as checking and refilling of oil levels, greasing, servicing pump and valve glands.
  • To observe good housekeeping, safety and health practices.
  • To ensure that the established handing over/taking over procedures of responsibility for the plant are observed consistently.
  • To perform other related duties and responsibilities consistent with the purpose and level of the post.

 

Qualifications and experience

  • Technician Certificate in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering.
  • Three (3) years relevant experience.
